Jerry Rice on Deion Sanders

Jerry Rice recalls facing Deion Sanders (pictured above) in the ’90s.

NFL Legend Deion Sanders stole the spotlight this month, and for good reason, after he led HBCU Jackson State to the SWAC championship and beat the decision of the nation’s top recruitment uncommit from the State of Florida and sign with JSU.

Since becoming a hot topic, he has received a lot of praise on social media and in interviews, including a story from the legend himself and the former. San Francisco 49ers teammate, Jerry Rice.

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson via Bally Sports Network recently spoke with Rice about Sanders’ recent accomplishments and what he’s done for the Jackson State program.

“I think he’s doing a great job and he’s bringing a lot of recognition and Deion is that kind of coach, you know? Prime Time,” he told Scoop B., while reminiscing about his own HBCU days at Mississippi Valley State. “I remember the way back to the day we beat Jackson State University; we never beat Jackson State University [laughs] in about 30 years? I remember winning that game and like over 100,000 people at that stadium and we were able to win that. So I think he’s brought a lot of recognition to SWAC (Southwest Athletic Conference) and what he’s doing at Jackson State is really amazing.”

The Jackson State Tigers (11-1) were crowned the SWAC champion after defeating the Prairie View A&M Panthers, October 27, on Dec. 4. It’s a huge achievement for both Sanders and the Tigers, who was only the previous 4-8 team. Sanders takes over as head coach for the 2020 season caused by COVID.

Rice recalls the match against Deion Sanders

Before the San Francisco partnership, Sanders and Rice were NFC rivals. Rice shared with Scoop B. the moment they first faced each other, while Sanders was still playing in Atlanta.

“I recall one (game) in Atlanta, and it was right before the ball started,” he said. “He was holding out his hand—he wanted to shake my hand and I slapped his hand away like, “Are you serious now? Okay, we can talk after the game, but we’re enemies for now! “This is mano-a-mano. And so I was high five to him and stuff like that, but we built a great relationship and that’s something we still talk about to this day, you know?

Go against the best. Sleepless nights. You’re doing the game over and over in your head, and I told Deion that and he said, “Well, Jerry, you know what? I also played the game over and over in my head because I knew I was up against the best. “It’s what we live for – challenges of that kind – and it was so much fun and that’s something I’ll never forget. ”

Sanders was ranked fifth overall by Atlanta Falcons in the 1989 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons with the Falcons facing Rice and the 49ers, before spending a single season with Rice and the Niners in 1994.

As the Tigers’ starting first-back, the younger Sanders completed 248 of 361 passes (68.7%) for 2,971 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions to end the season. Regular 2021.

“I’m proud of him the way he played,” Deion Sanders told The Undefeated, “The way he looks at the field, the way he motivates his teammates, the way he approaches daily practice, the way he stands on their ass when they’re not doing what they need to do. I’m just proud of his maturity and the person he is on and off the pitch.”

Shedeur Sanders will be honored January 7 at the FCS National Awards Gala in Frisco, Texas. It will air January 8 on the Bally Sports Area Network.
