Several New York Jets players meet before the start of the NFL game.

In 2019, the New York Jets invested a record $85 million in roadster CJ Mosley during his time as a free agent.

They reset the market in the hope that Mosely could fix the team’s culture and become an anchor for the future.

Unfortunately, his first two years were marred by injury and a world pandemic that forced him to opt out of the 2020 season, though after a special 2021 campaign, the veteran This is still getting a lot of compliments.

NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler polled more than 50 executives, coaches, scouts and players to come up with a top 10 list for every position group.

The latest edition for ESPN showcases the best domestic defenders in the league and Mosley has earned some special recognition.

While he’s currently not in the top 10 of the league in his place, Mosely has one mentioned title:

“Still really solid, always strong and smooth, never a shaky athlete,” an NFC executive told Fowler. “Didn’t drop much but was on that trajectory.”

The 30-year-old has only matched two competitions in his first two seasons with the Jets, but last year Mosley was finally able to show the team what he is capable of:

  • Total 168 tackles
  • Two sacks
  • Twice forced clumsy

After not playing many games from 2019-20, Mosley has played 16 games in 2021 and played 99% of the defense.

Still one of the best

When head coach Robert Saleh took over in 2021, there were some initial concerns about Mosley’s switch to his formation.

Though after seeing his commitment to changing his body and his obvious leadership skills, Saleh changed his phase.

Will Mosley be on the team in 2023? That’s a lot to be determined.

There’s a built-in contractual opt-out option if the Jets want to do it after this upcoming season. If they cut ties with Mosley a year from now, they would save over $14 million in cap space with minimal damage ($3 million).

Though he’s locked down for the 2022 campaign and that’s good news for the Jets. While he may not be an All-Pro-level player like he was at the Baltimore Ravens, Mosley is still easily one of the best players on the team.

Not only is he talented, Mosley is extremely important because of the position he plays and the lack of depth in the room.

Saleh has built this attacking style of defense that puts a lot of pressure on his midfielders in calling the defense and making attacks. When you consider that the greens and whites do absolutely nothing to add to the room this season, the Jets are clearly all-out on Mosley as they have no other choice.

If the former Alabam star gets injured or falls down in any dramatic way, this entire defense can fold up like a cheap suit. Though if he does go away for a year in a row, perhaps the Jets will entertain to bring him back in reduced numbers in 2023.
