Veteran NFL racer Melvin Ingram had a good time during practice.

The New York Jets did some solid work on both sides of the ball through the early sections of the freestyle.

With the 2022 NFL draft approaching, there’s still a lot of work to do on the list.

Brad Spielberger recently predicted the best landing spots for the top free agents remaining in the market for Pro Football Focus.

Veteran passer Melvin Ingram is still available, and Spielberger believes the Jets will make a lot of sense.

He is expected to land a one-year deal for a fully guaranteed $5 million.

Despite his advanced age (32 will be 33 at the beginning of the 2022 season), Ingram still an elite person and optionally as efficient as an EDGE pusher.

Last season when he was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, his passing score of 77.6 was the best of anyone on the roster in the knockout stages, according to the PFF.

It’s not just a one-year miracle, Ingram hasn’t had a top score lower than 70 in nine years.

Ingram originally entered the league as the 18th pick overall in the 2012 NFL draft out of South Carolina:

  • 51 sacks
  • Over 119 quarterback hits
  • 74 tackles lost

During that time, he earned three Pro Bowl nominations and became one of the most underrated hurdlers in football.

In an exclusive interview, ESPN NFL draft analyst Jordan Reid told me on my YouTube channel that he’s going to adopt a “double-dip” strategy in the upcoming NFL draft at EDGE if he was the Jets.

Given how important the position is for head coach Robert Saleh and this defence, that makes a lot of sense.

However, you don’t want to rely solely on drafts to fill in the holes on your list. In an ideal world, you’d want to fill in as many gaps as possible before the draft to maximize full flexibility on draft date.

With that in mind, the addition of Ingram can only help with your defense.

If you sign him a cheap one-year contract that won’t stop you from doing whatever you want in draft. It just acts as a security net in case you can’t get the person you want in the draft.

Even if the Jets get twice in the EDGE rush, they’ll only have ample body to swing by the end of this season. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to have some depth, especially considering all the wounds that killed this group last summer.

Back in that 2012 NFL draft, the Jets had a chance to take down Ingram, but they picked Quinton Coples from North Carolina instead with a pick of 16 overall.

He eventually left and Ingram went on to have a fantastic career in the professional world. While signing him now won’t completely undo past mistakes, it will at least help in 2022.
