The New York Jets offensive will meet George Fant in 2021.

It’s been an odd — and not overly inspiring — week from the New York Jets, especially when your name is George Fant.

The starting offensive tackle played at left flank in 2021 and put in an admirable performance, to say the least. According to Pro Football Focus, Fant excelled as a pass protector with just 18 quarterback presses allowing over 594 pass-blocking snaps. Even more impressively, they only burdened the LT with a sack and three QB hits.

Based on that performance, the coaching staff endorsed Fant as a left tackle this spring – ahead of former first-round draft pick Mekhi Becton. Unfortunately things changed after the youngster’s latest injury and the signing of Duane Brown.

Brown had never played proper tackle in his career, so the Jet decided to go back on the promise they made to Fant and switch the more versatile player to RT. Of course, the newcomer didn’t last long, picking up a shoulder injury this week – and the seesaw turned again.

Jets OT George Fant ‘frustrated’ after change of position

As we enter the Jets’ first week opener against the Baltimore Ravens, Fant is back on the left, his second position change of the offseason. In addition, the veteran goes into the election campaign without the hoped-for financial security.

Fant and the Jets’ front office had reportedly discussed a potential contract extension throughout the offseason but never agreed on the terms.

“Obviously I’m frustrated,” Fant admitted to reporters on Sept. 9, the Friday before Week 1. “It’s the second time I’ve had to move [positions] the game week. I can’t control it, but it’s obviously a frustrating situation.”

The Athletics Zack Rosenblatt provided the locker room quote and newsday reporter Neil Best added that all Fant wants to do is “get comfortable and play a [specific] Position.” No more flip-flopping back and forth.

That begs the question, if Brown returns sometime this season, will Fant be asked to switch roles for the third time? — In a move back to proper tackle?

It’s certainly possible, although there’s currently no confirmation as to how long Brown will be sidelined.
