HONG KONG — A former police officer and government security chief is poised to become Hong Kong’s next top official after declaring his intention to run for the post, a succession that would signal Beijing’s crackdown on national security in the city won’t let up.
John Lee, currently ranked No. 2 in the city, is the only serious candidate to have thrown his hat in the ring so far for the contest, which will be decided by an electoral committee of around 1,500 mostly Beijing loyalists and closely orchestrated by China’s central government. If elected, he would succeed Carrie Lamwho said on Monday she would step down on June 30 after a five-year term, her tenure marked by mass protests and a recent surge in Covid-19 that has killed thousands of elderly people.
