As his trial with ex-wife Amber Heard continues to unfold, many are curious to know if Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are still on good terms. That Pirates of the Caribbean The actor dated the French model and singer for 14 years and had two children together, raising questions about where they are today.
Depp and Paradis first met in 1994 when the What does Gilbert Grape eat? The actor dated Kate Moss. Their first meeting was brief, and it wasn’t until 1998 that the couple got back together. It was then that Depp met Paradis in a hotel lobby in the singer’s home country of France. It was the sight of none other than her back that sent Depp into a frenzy: “She was wearing a dress with an exposed back and I saw that back and that neck and then she turned around and I saw those eyes and — boom!” My life as a single man was over,” Depp said The Daily Mail in 2011. The Sweeney Todd The actor mentioned the fateful moment even earlier in an interview Rolling Stone, telling the magazine: “Whammo man, across the room, amazing, unbelievable, awesome. The back, the back!”
The couple quickly forged a real relationship and just after dating for a year, they welcomed their first child together: daughter Lily-Rose Depp, who was born in May 1999 in her mother’s native France. Three years later, Depp and Paradis completed their family with the birth of their son, John “Jack” Christopher Depp III. But their relationship wasn’t built to last. In 2012, the two announced their separation. Depp’s publicist confirmed in a statement released to Entertainment Tonight at the time that he and Paradis had “amicably separated,” adding, “Please respect her privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of her children.”
Later that year, Paradis played coy when asked about their breakup. “I don’t want to talk about him. Who said artists should sell their souls and reveal everything about themselves?” she said in an interview with French cubit while promoting her film Cornuaille, in a quote from People. “It’s my duty to promote this film and my albums, but can you imagine what it feels like to see people making a business out of their pain?”
Just weeks later, however, Paradis offered a glimmer of an explanation for their split. “Nothing is ever certain, but if something in love doesn’t work from the start, it never will,” she said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “Don’t push it. Sometimes you might be in an unhappy relationship; you are very much in love with someone but it makes you unhappy and you think things can change and you can do it.”
For his part, Depp hinted that the distance is a major stressor in their relationship. “Relationships are very difficult. Especially in the hype I’m in because you’re always gone or they’re gone and that’s why it’s hard. It wasn’t easy for her. It wasn’t easy for me. It wasn’t easy for the kids,” he said Rolling Stone in 2013. “The course of this relationship — you play it through until it goes, one thing leads to another.” So whatever the reason that stops it doesn’t stop you caring for that person and she is the mother of your children and you will always know each other and you will always be in each other’s lives because of those children . You might as well make the best of it.”
But that optimistic reaction was years ago — and a lot has happened since then. Depp married actress Amber Heard in 2015 after several years of dating. By 2016, Heard filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order against the actor, accusing him of verbal and physical abuse during their relationship. Since then, Depp and Heard have been at odds in court, leading many to wonder what Paradis is making of these heinous allegations against her ex. Read on for her take.
How did Vanessa Paradis react to Amber Heard’s allegations?
After the British newspaper published an article calling Depp a “wife beater”, the actor filed a defamation lawsuit and went to court with the British publisher in 2020. British courts at the time accepted written testimonies from Depp’s former partners Winona Ryder and Paradis as part of the actor’s defamation lawsuit that of the sun Publisher. Neither was eventually asked to provide evidence at the trial, but both called all allegations of domestic violence against Depp lacking credibility.
“I’ve known Johnny for 25 years. We have been partners for 14 years and raised our two children together. Over the years I have known Johnny to be a kind, thoughtful, generous and non-violent person and father,” Paradis shared in their May 2020 statement. “On film sets, actors, directors and entire crews adore him because he is humble and respectful of everyone and is one of the best actors we have ever seen.”
She continued, “I am aware of the allegations that Amber Heard has publicly accused Johnny of for more than four years. This is nothing like the real Johnny I know and from my many years of personal experience I can say that he has never been violent or abusive to me.”
Paradis went on to describe Heard’s domestic violence allegations as “outrageous” and “really upsetting” — not just for Depp’s career, but for her family as well. “I saw that these outrageous statements were really disturbing and also damaged his career because unfortunately people continue to believe these false facts,” she concluded. “This is so upsetting as he has helped so many people in his personal and professional life with kindness and generosity.”
Despite Paradis’ comments, Depp ultimately lost his bid against the British publisher when a High Court ruled against him in November 2020. It remains to be seen if the actor’s 2022 trial in the US will meet the same fate — and if Paradis still feels the same. However, based on her earlier statement, it’s likely that Depp’s ex is still on his side today.
