Last week, Otavio scored his first competitive goal for the Portuguese national team.

If Cristiano Ronaldo had brought his shooting shoes to the party, the Porto playmaker would have provided an assist on Tuesday night.

It was the kind of pass that made Otavio his trademark at the Estadio do Dragoa. Slammed instinctively towards the box, cutting the visitors’ defense in half like a samurai sword slicing effortlessly through a block of room-temperature butter.

Unfortunately for Otavio, the most prolific footballer to ever play, he missed the goal. The pass deserved better. Ronaldo’s shot, which dribbled past the post, ended up being the bum Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Liverpool’s new £50m star?

Nonetheless, assist or not, this was still a tantalizing glimpse into what Otavio was all about. There were plenty more of those in his 76 minutes on the pitch, although the Brazilian-born 27-year-old was admittedly overshadowed by team-mate Bruno Fernandes as Portugal qualified for the World Cup at the expense of North Macedonia.

A few minutes after Ronaldo’s miss, Otavio retrieves the ball between the lines, leaping away from a defender before cutting a brilliant outside pass down the barrel of an oncoming Diogo Jota.

With A Bola reporting that Liverpool are once again on the heels of a player who almost joined the Premier League giants in a £35m deal less than 12 months ago, Otavio’s understanding of Jota’s movements – and vice versa – should be Merseyside have mouths watering.

Just four days earlier, Otavio set up Jota’s ninth international goal in a 3-1 win in the semi-finals of qualifying against Turkey.

It’s not hard to imagine a midfielder of his vision and class – he has almost as many assists (39) as Trent Alexander-Arnold in the last three seasons – forming a similarly impressive partnership with Luis Diaz, Sadio Mane or Mo Salah .

Accordingly a bola, The £50m-valued Otavio is also a target for Newcastle and Manchester United.

Wherever he ends up, Otavio’s sudden emergence as the driving playmaker of the Portuguese national team certainly bodes well for the team that wins the race.
