Dean Jones said Give Me Sport that Jesse Lingard is not a priority for Tottenham this summer but that Antonio Conte’s side are interested in Everton and West Ham’s goal following his sacking from Manchester United.
Lingard, 29, is leaving Manchester United after 235 appearances in all competitions for his youth side. But he was rarely first choice and was even loaned out to West Ham in 2020-21. Now he is looking for a new home.
Everton and West Ham are reportedly looking to sign the England star despite his huge £150,000-a-week demands. Spurs are also showing interest in the playmaker as they seek to improve the native nature of their squad.
But Jones has said Tottenham don’t see Lingard as a ‘priority’ this summer. That certainly puts both Everton and West Ham in the driver’s seat to sign the 32-time England star.
“It will depend on how they sell these players. Then they will wait for the market and see what options there are. But I’ve been told Lingard is not a priority for Tottenham at the moment,” Jones told Give Me Sport.
Jones: Lingard not a priority for Tottenham
Tottenham have numerous options in attack. Richarlison has been added to an attacking arsenal that includes Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn, and Ivan Perisic.
So Lingard could be viewed more as a playmaker by Tottenham. But even then, Lingard’s signing would mean that Conte would have to change his system. His 3-4-3 formation used two defensive midfielders — and no No. 10.
Perhaps Lingard’s signing was put on hold simply because there isn’t a specific hole Lingard can fill – other than being homegrown.
