Speaking of The Red Agenda PodcastStuart James has shared what he’s heard from people within the FA about Gareth Southgate and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Southgate and Alexander-Arnold have had a strange time together with England.

Alexander-Arnold is undoubtedly one of the best full-backs and one of the best players in the world, but he has only won 16 caps and was even left out of an England squad last year.

According to James, Southgate had long had visions of playing Alexander-Arnold in midfield, with the idea dating back to his U17 days.

what was said

James shared what he knows about Southgate’s long-term plan with Alexander-Arnold.

“I spoke to some people at the FA and they said Southgate has known Trent since he was under-17s I think and they said there was discussion early on about whether or not he could play in midfield for his country. Coming back to what we said, if he’s so good at right-back why move him? It seems ridiculous to me,” James said.

Worth a try

James says moving what is arguably the best right-back in the world to midfield sounds ridiculous, but think of the depth England have in that position.

England want all their best players on the pitch and with Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier all being international footballers, Alexander-Arnold’s move makes sense.

He certainly has the skills to play in the middle of the park and if Southgate has had that plan since Alexander-Arnold was in the Under-17s then it’s worth a shot.
