Judge reduces sentence for pastor who raped 14-year-old girl for being ‘a good Christian’

The religion, particularly that of Christianity, is widely followed by people living in the American Southeast, a region of the United States that includes Tennessee.

Tennessee, also known as the Volunteer State, is one of the nation’s most devout Christian states.

Just last week, David Lynn Richards Jr., a longtime pastor, was sentenced to 12 years in Tennessee State Penitentiary by a judge in Knox County, one of the state’s most populous counties in eastern Tennessee.

Sexual Assaults by Pastors Local news publication Knoxville News Sentinel reported that Richards had been convicted of nine separate crimes ranging from sexual harassment by an authority figure to incest and rape.

David Lynn Richards caught charges of sexually abusing his daughter, whom he adopted several years before the incidents.

Richards began a two-year sexual abuse of his adopted daughter, whose name is Amber Richards, when she was just 14 years old.

The Knoxville News Sentinel recognized Amber Richards by name after she offered to appear in public at her adoptive father’s recent court hearing.

Otherwise, the court would have placed a veil of anonymity on Amber Richards and ensured that her name and image would not be tarnished by her harassment by the former preacher.

David Lynn Richards was caught after Amber decided to speak out against the longstanding wave of abuse earlier this year.

Despite an overwhelming mountain of evidence stacked against him, David Lynn Richards never wavered from his original statement that he did not commit any of the alleged acts against Amber.

As a result, and coupled with David’s long history as a Christian minister throughout the Knoxville area, David Lynn Richards asked Knox County Criminal Court Judge Steve Sword to spare him.

Sword went on to call Richards a “good Christian man,” a title that has made its way into news headlines over the past week.

Richards faced a maximum sentence of 72 years, a sentence prosecutors had sought.
