She also joined the Le Cercle des Gourmettes women’s cookery club, where she met cookbook author Simone Beck, who suggested that Child should also write a French cookbook for Americans. In 1961, Child published her first cookbook, Mastery of French culinary art, with Button Doubleday Publishing Group. The book, which ran to 726 pages, was a critical and commercial success and led to Child’s first cooking show, The French chefin 1963. The show, considered one of the first cooking shows on American television, skyrocketed Child’s career, which spanned dozens of other cookbooks and cooking shows before her death in 2004.
