Julian Edelman went from catching passes from Jimmy Garoppolo to helping explain how Jimmy G caught tackles from past teammates before he arrived at the San Francisco 49ers.
Back in October 2021 in a segment of Double insurance podcast, Ex-New England Patriots close-ended Martellus Bennett described Garoppolo as a “b****” twice for revealing how the former backup for Tom Brady decided not to play a game at the last minute. – a game where the Patriots eventually lost to Jimmy G was originally scheduled to begin.
Now, Super Bowl 53’s Most Valuable Player has a chance to address those comments on I’m an athlete podcast is released on Monday, June 27.

Edelman Details What He Remembered
Game in question: AFC East 2nd October 2016 split between the Pats and Buffalo Bills.
Brady is serving a suspended sentence for his involvement in “Deflategate”. Garoppolo entered that match with a pain in his shoulder – his non-throwing shoulder. But he still practices during the week – giving the idea inside the Pats’ facility that he’s going to play against the Bills.
Buffalo beat New England 16-0, the Patriots’ first loss of the season.
Edelman, however, was given a handwritten note by podcast host Brandon Marshall. That note features a direct quote from Bennett, a former Pats teammate.
“Dude, we lost two games. One of them is because Jimmy Garoppolo has become a (seriously). He decided not to play right before the game. Jacoby Brissett came out and played with a (skillful) thumb and played hard, but Jimmy was just one (revealing) of it all,” Edelman read word for word. Edelman also shared how Bennett described Garoppolo’s agent trying to protect him that day from further injury.
Edelman then went into what he recalled that day.
“We went into Week 4 and I guess Jimmy was training,” Edelman said. “And then, you know, decided not to play and Jacoby played with, without the ligaments in his thumb, which is what you can’t do that as a quarterback, you can’t catch. “
The recently retired receiver later revealed that it wasn’t just Bennett who was angry about Garoppolo’s last-minute decision not to play.
“A lot of people went crazy about it. Edelman said.
Is one of them Edelman?
“I’m not going to lie, I was crazy about it,” Edelman said. “I sacrifice my body all day, all day long. I’m shooting this, numb that, broken ribs, broken shoulder, 3rd grade, suspended just to play, you know? I can understand why Marty would think that.”
How long is Edelman going to finish playing?
Edelman announced his retirement before the 2021 season. However, Brady managed to convince him to give it one more NFL run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – something Edelman revealed to the Manning brothers during Thursday Night Football. Two in Week 11.
One reason to walk away involved his knees. However, Edelman spoke to I Am Athlete co-host Adam “Pacman” Jones about his knee condition and health.
“Now that I’ve been off for a year, my body feels pretty straight,” says Edelman.
He then shared how he’s still getting out and rescheduled courses during his break, sparking the idea that he might consider coming back.
“I went and played and you ran the routes,” Edelman said. “But then you see when you run the routes the next day, it’s like, okay, I’m not too bad, but I feel like in my mind I’ve got 10,000 reps behind,” Edelman said. “If I wanted the ball, I would have to go out and do it over and over again.”
While he’s already familiar with Garoppolo, his latest remarks and the way the Bay Area receiver unit loads make Edelman against the 49ers a long shot. He revealed where he was going.
“If I could go back, I’d come back as a Pat, maybe,” he say.
