New England are having a regular season as they finish second in the AFC East with a 10-7 record. The Patriots were eliminated from the knockout round in the Wildcard Round by AFC East members, the Buffalo Bills.
Mac Jones became his own during his rookie season when he threw 22 touchdown passes last season. Those are the most touches of the ball of any rookie in 2021.
But Edelman is worried about the Patriots entering 2022. The wide receiver appeared on the “I’m an Athlete” podcast and didn’t talk about the offense. Edelman is more worried about the defense.
“They don’t throw the ball behind the stadium. Edelman said. “That’s what worries me with the Patriots. Will their defenses be there to allow this slow-moving Mac to become what he’s become? “
What has changed on defense?
New England has a big change in defense. JC Jackson is no longer on the list and leaves a huge gap in second place.
Jackson has led the Patriots in interceptions for the previous two seasons. With 17 interceptions over the past two years, the corner shows he is a capable defender.
The Patriots also suffered some losses at defence. Kyle Van Noy left the team and Dont’a Hightower remained a free agent. As the season continues to approach, it is less likely that New England will bring him back.
How will the patriots fill these holes?
Malcolm Butler will be trusted to take on top-corner duties in 2022. Butler has retired to return to New England and will bring years of experience to a relatively young group of full-backs.
At 32, Butler’s peak form is in the rearview mirror but his side’s full 2021 season out could mean he’s back refreshed in 2022. Jonathan Jones will also be looking to help Butler and the Patriots defense.
In midfield, New England has some big players back. Matthew Judon will continue to be a key piece of the defense. The success of the unit as well as the whole team will be predictive of his performance.
Judon was one of the best players on New England’s roster last season. Judon led the team in the bag (12.5) and earned himself a Pro Bowl nod.
The Patriots also re-signed Ja’Whaun Bentley. The 26-year-old will be an important part of the defence, having led New England in tackles (109) last season. Bentley recently signed a two-year, $6 million deal.
So the Patriots will need to fill a major defensive hole that Edelman has taken care of properly. Fans in New England will have to wait and see if the Patriots legend was overthinking it or correctly predicted that the team would be in trouble.
