Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha share emotional moment in Leeds after FT after Brighton draw

Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha both impressed as Leeds scored a crucial point against Brighton – and BBC Radio Leeds Editor Jonathan Buchan posted an image a moment they shared after full-time on the pitch.

Despite a setback against Chelsea, Brazil international Raphinha started and finished Sunday’s game – in which Brighton scored the first goal. A nice finish from Danny Welbeck who passed Diego Llorente to pass Illan Meslier.

But Leeds were much better, perhaps helped by the fact that they didn’t get a red card – unlike their previous two games. They tested Brighton star Robert Sanchez on numerous occasions before leveling in injury time.

Joe Gelhardt controlled a clean pass from Llorente before rounding two Brighton players. Struijk headed in his cross and sent Elland Road ballistic. An emotional moment, and a very big one in the relegation battle.

A goal and a result made it all the better after Everton lost to Brentford and Burnley to Tottenham. Buchan shared a picture of Raphinha and Phillips well past full-time, perhaps a hint at a future exit.

Raphinha and Phillips share Leeds moment: Both away this summer?

If Leeds go down, both players will undoubtedly request an exit as they are vital parts of both the England and Brazil squads. Before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, they need football from the Premier League.

If Leeds stay up, things will get more complicated. Raphinha is a target for Barcelona and more recently Newcastle. Notwithstanding the relegation, Raphinha is likely to move on in the coming weeks.

That could affect Phillips’ future. If Raphinha leaves, Leeds could feel they need to keep Phillips. The player himself, Leeds through and through, might want a better end to his Leeds career.
