We continue our coverage of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary. And here in Brooklyn, as you can see, *** very large turnout, local artists and elected officials who have come together to organize *** free hip hop concert to celebrate the news Lindsay Tanny takes us to the Event to get us in the mood Relive some of the entertaining 50 years of the much-loved genre as Brooklynites come together for a free concert. Over 20 local hip-hop artists took the stage to share their favorites with the community. All thanks to MP Nicky Lucas and Councilor-elect Chris Banks. They teamed up with DJ Keith Watkins and friends to put on the events. That’s some great energy, man. It’s a damn blessing to bring unity to the community. This is my dream. Watkins has been performing since its beginnings in 1973. I asked what hip hop means to him. It is love for each other. It’s poetry. When it comes to hip hop, anything is possible. It’s the damn culture that brings people together and whose rhythm makes the dance move. You know, Video Music Box founder Ralph McDaniels hosted the event. He wants to remind people that hip hop means much more than just music. There’s a lot of breakdancing in this community here in East New York and the surrounding area. The graffiti artists came from the culture in general, called hip-hop. Sometimes they just talk about the artist, but the culture was alive and strong and still is. That’s all we did. They told me I should be able to do it. If you miss this year’s event, don’t worry. Congregant Lucas tells me that they plan to make this an annual event and will be even bigger and better next year. Vice President Kamala Harris hosted a celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary on Saturday, featuring performances by some of the music genre’s pioneers and stars. Common, Jeezy, MC Lyte and Roxanne Shante were among the hip-hop artists invited to Harris’ party at the vice presidential residence. Many trace the genre’s origins to a back-to-school party on August 11, 1973, where 18-year-old Clive Campbell, also known as DJ Kool Herc, played in an apartment building in the Bronx in New York City. Harris said hip-hop is “the ultimate American art form” that “shapes every aspect of American popular culture.” “Hip-hop culture is American culture,” she told the crowd. Hip-hop has grown into a global art form, becoming one of the world’s most influential cultural forces, an integral part of social and racial justice movements, and a multibillion-dollar industry built on generations of rapping, emcees, DJs, breaking, and Graffiti is constructed. Harris noted that Public Enemy rapper Chuck D has referred to rap as “Black America,” CNN said: “It has always channeled the voices of the people. It tells the stories that don’t make the news,” she said before joining her husband, Doug Emhoff, to watch the musicians perform. Saturday’s celebration was held in collaboration with Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation Urban. “This is a hip-hop household!” said Emhoff.
