Karl Urban’s transformation from Middle-earth king Eomer into the rugged anti-hero of The Boys

Karl Urban plays the vengeful vigilante Billy Butcher on The Boys, but he’s unrecognizable in his earlier roles without his signature facial hair, most notably on Star Trek.

*Warning: The Boys season 3 spoilers ahead*

The Boys takes the traditional superheroes and turns them into a world where they are the real villains. Homelander, based on Superman, is the only thing that resembles the world of DC. As Chace Crawford Calls it, the show is “Justice League meets a Tarantino movie,” and there’s no better way to describe it.

Season 3, currently available on Amazon Prime, made it even better with more violence and graphic content. The first few minutes of the first episode are literally about an exploding genital.

Led by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), the boys are back and ready to take on the Supes. It’s Urban’s biggest TV role in years, but he didn’t always look like the scruffy Brit we all know now.

And no, he’s not related to Keith Urban. The musician is Australian, the actor from New Zealand. However, it is a great coincidence that they have matching surnames, given names beginning with K, and their tendency to rock long hair.

Karl Urban has played everything from the Russian assassin to the Eomer of Middle-earth

Karl Urban portrayed Eomer Éadig, later the 18th King of Rohan, who fought in the War of the Ring to defeat the Dark Lord Sauron and destroy the One Ring.

With long blonde locks, it’s a far cry from Urban’s Billy Butcher.

He gave his hair a slight trim for the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

He turned into a buzzcut for the premiere of the final LOTR episode, The Return Of The King.

The actor starred as Ghost in the epic action film Pathfinder. A Viking boy adopted by a tribe who grows up into a fierce warrior who fights Vikings who are slaughtering the tribes.

This guy could easily take on Billy Butcher—without the laser eyes, of course.

Not a single facial hair was in sight for his role as Doctor Leonard McCoy in the Star Trek reboots.

The bald look was next for Urban as Skurge The Executioner in Thor: Ragnarok. That’s not bald, he really shaved his head.

Ah, his hair grew back in time for promos.
