Karleen Jame Biswanger arrested for avocado assault

Karleen Biswanger (Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office)
A 39-year-old woman in Florida faces felony charges after allegedly throwing an avocado at her 68-year-old boyfriend, hitting him squarely in the head. Karleen Jame Biswanger was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with a person aged 65 or older on a count of household battery charges, Law&Crime records show.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded at 12 Petersburg, which is just a few miles southwest of Tampa.
Local officials said Biswanger and the victim had lived together for about a year prior to the incident. In a likely attempt to explain the nearly 30-year age difference between Biswanger and the victim, police also noted that the two “had consensual sexual intercourse” during that time.
Authorities say Biswanger threw the green fruit and other objects during an argument with her senior beau.
“The defendant threw an avocado in the victim’s face, injuring his right eye,” the affidavit reads. “The defendant also threw a metal hanging bar at the victim, injuring his upper right arm and forearm.”
Authorities said “part” of the dispute was observed by a neighbor.
After responding MPs said they read Biswanger her Miranda rights, she denied “straight hitting” the victim.
The document does not provide additional details about what may have caused the alleged argument or what parts of the argument the neighbor allegedly saw, but deputies noted that no firearms, weapons or alcohol were involved in the incident.
According to state court records, Biswanger has a long history of run-ins with the law, some of which include allegations that she threw unusual objects at others.
Last year, she was charged with domestic battery for allegedly throwing a “9-inch cardboard box full of stationery at her father and punching him in the upper right chest,” according to an affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime.
The incident allegedly happened right after the deputies left the apartment after Biswanger’s father called to apply for a welfare check for them because he was “worried [Biswanger] and her drug problem,” the document reads. However, the charges were dropped after Biswanger’s father signed a document stating he did not want his daughter’s case to be prosecuted.
Biswanger was also charged with domestic battery in 2015 after she allegedly came home “very drunk” and punched her then-boyfriend in the face multiple times with a closed fist, cutting open her left eye, an affidavit said. Her then-boyfriend also signed a document demanding that Biswanger not be prosecuted, and the charges against her were dropped.
Charges against Biswanger since 2003 include, but are not limited to, leaving the scene of an accident, retail theft, driving under the influence, possession of methadone, possession of alprazolam and driving with a suspended driver’s license.
A previous case resulted in a 120-day prison sentence in 2019 after he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance.
