American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie performed on Live! With Kelly and Ryan on June 22, 2022 to talk all about American Idol and play a fun game.
The judges talked about why they thought American Idol was the best place for aspiring artists and how they started earning the trust of rising stars. However, that doesn’t mean that every artist who does well on the show is also successful in the music industry.
Katy Perry said “Idol” wasn’t enough for competitors
While the American Idol platform is great for people trying to make it in the music industry, the platform alone isn’t always enough, Perry said during the interview.
“We’re in our fifth season as judges…but I think the world is changing, there are new stars being born every day and there’s so much being posted all over social media that it makes you stand out even more must,” she said.
She added that attendees need to use more than just the American Idol platform and also focus on social media. That doesn’t mean talented stars aren’t coming to American Idol, though.
“Even Juliard, people come from there because they trust us,” she said, saying that people from very respectable music schools trust American Idol.
Richie also thinks American Idol is great for aspiring artists.
“I feel so good about it because artists come out and trust us,” Lionel said.
When it came to how the judges would personally fare if they were put in “American Idol,” they had mixed reactions.
When asked, Richie said he thought he would do “terrible” on “American Idol,” and Bryan thought he did well because he was able to change it up enough each week.
“I would have been too weird,” Perry shared.
An “Idol” champion may have overshadowed the show
Samantha Diaz, the ‘American Idol’ season 18 champion, who went by the name ‘Just Sam’ on the show, has apparently given the show a try amid its upcoming music release.
“To all the doors that have closed on me: I’m coming back to buy the building. #JustSam,” the artist wrote as an Instagram caption.
Diaz previously opened up about being “broke” after her stint on the show to pay for the American Idol record label.
She revealed on Instagram that she thought American Idol would make her time as an artist easier, but that wasn’t the case.
“I thought it would be easy,” she said at the time. “Just go into the studio, record, release music. And that’s not how the world works. That’s not how the industry works. It takes time, it takes money I don’t have. It takes patience.”
She is no longer signed to Hollywood Records, to which she was attached after American Idol.
“I’m not even going to tell you how much money I had to pay after I left the label to claim songs I had already recorded,” she said at the time.
“American Idol” is expected to return in spring 2023 for the show’s 21st season. It is expected that each of the three judges and host Ryan Seacrest will return.
