It wouldn’t necessarily be a good thing for The Voice coach and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson to describe a singing performance as “scary,” but at her recent Halloween performance, that’s exactly the kind of reaction Clarkson got is hoping for.

Clarkson opened the Halloween episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show with a Kellyoke cover of Bobby Pickett’s famous Halloween anthem Monster Mash, complete with a spooky wardrobe, a spooky set and a spooky arrangement of the song. In the performance, Clarkson acts as a ghost haunting a group of friends camping in the woods, eventually being joined by her band and backup singers as her group of monster friends.

Kelly Clarkson’s Halloween performance began with four friends camping in the woods and sharing spooky stories around a campfire. Clarkson and a fiddler then suddenly emerge from the mist and begin the song. Throughout the performance, a number of musicians come and go to the same ghastly effect Clarkson entered, startling the four friends. At the end of the song, Clarkson and her full band rock out to the chorus, and after they fade out, Clarkson and her backup singers come back on screen for one final jump scare.

Fans raved about the performance. One fan wrote on YouTube: “Just when I think she couldn’t be more talented, she goes out and surpasses herself again. This is so iconic! 🎃”.

“I really think very few people really understand how great a singer she is. To be honest, she’s just way too good. The tone, riffs, range, head vocals, technique and everything else is just amazing. Can you name just one singer who can do it better? Just one,” wrote another fan.

Vulture described the performance as “another instant classic” by Clarkson, whose Kellyoke covers regularly make headlines.

Clarkson, who described her costume as a “Stevie Nick’s Ghost”She exited the haunted forest that Kellyoke set up for her entire Halloween episode. The singer said they spent the entire weekend constructing the set and pre-recording the “Monster Mash” performance prior to recording the episode so they could add any special effects.

The Kelly Clarkson Show always makes a big splash on Halloween, and the Kellyoke performances help inspire that. Kellyoke’s previous Halloween performances have included Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” (featuring Clarkson in a Hocus Pocus costume), Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” and Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters”.

in one digital exclusive The show’s design team, shared on The Kelly Clarkson Show YouTube channel, offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the performance and set of Ghostbusters 2021 came together. Clarkson’s music director Jason Halbert was very enthusiastic about the performance and said he had wanted to do it for 30 years.

The team was able to source the “Ecto-1,” the original car from the Ghostbusters movie, to have on set during the 2021 episode. Clarkson even guest-starred Ernie Hudson from the film and had her team use special effects to make it appear like he was helping Clarkson fight a ghost.
