Kenya Barris Confirms Upcoming ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Remake Will Feature LGBTQ+ Characters Who ‘Reflect The World’

Last month, social media went into a frenzy when it was announced that Black-ish creator Kenya Barris has been chosen to helm an upcoming remake of the classic fantasy film The Wizard of Oz, and now he has one given a little insight into what fans can expect. During an exclusive interview, Kenya Barris confirmed that his version of The Wizard of Oz will feature LGBTQ+ characters who “reflect the world.”

Somewhere over the rainbow takes on a whole new meaning as Kenya Barris has detailed his plans modern representation in his forthcoming remake of the 1939 Hollywood classic, The Wizard of Oz. @Variety reports exclusively, Barris explained that to tell the cult film’s story in a modern era, it was important to include LGBTQ+ characters that were absent from the original. “The original was an allegory and a reflection of the world at the time with things like the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl,” said Barris

He continued, adding, “Now we’re going to cast a mirror to where we are right now and take different characters from the LGBTQ community, from different cultural communities and socio-economic communities, and tell a story that reflects the world. I think this is the best time to do it.”

Realizing that directing a film so cherished by film fans is a difficult task that involves a lot of pressure (and probably intense criticism), Kenya Barris admitted his nerves. He explained: “I’m nervous. Hopefully my film will last as long as the original. Hopefully my film comes out.”

As we previously reported, in August Kenya Barris was officially confirmed to be writing and directing a reimagining of the timeless fantasy classic The Wizard of Oz through his production company Khalabo Ink Society.

There have been several retellings of the story over the years, with the most notable for the black community being the 1978 version The Wiz, starring icons Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Kenya Barris Confirms Upcoming ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Remake Will Feature LGBTQ+ Characters Who ‘Reflect The World’
