Kevin Campbell ‘fears’ £7m Arsenal player

Kevin Campbell has revealed he “fears” for Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares, who “we may never see again” after his last spell with the club. as he told the Highbury Squad.

Following Kieran Tierney’s injury which could sideline the Scot for the remainder of the season, Tavares has placed more emphasis on delivering as Campbell made it clear his confidence needs to be ‘built up’.

Arsenal’s £7million signing on Monday night (Guardian) began his side’s 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace – he was elated at half-time.

Being an early substitute is hard for any player to take, but it happened with Tavares in the first half against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and at half-time at Selhurst Park.

All of this only puts more pressure on the 22-year-old as Campbell made it clear the youngster needs to be picked up.

“His confidence is low, that’s for sure,” Campbell said. “Like you said, you fear for him because we may never see him again.

“You were just concerned about where he was mentally. Sometimes when you keep falling off your horse, you have to keep getting back on.

‘He’s got to get some confidence from somewhere. Let’s face it, he’s playing well, he’s the best man for the job. We have to get him to play. Why don’t you give him another chance?

“I’d rather try to build it. Build his confidence. He hasn’t been in the first team for a long time, so he needs to be built up. He won’t end up where he was.”

Well, Mikel Arteta has some big decisions to make regarding Tavares and whether he stays in his XI.

Given that he hasn’t lasted more than 45 minutes in the last few games Arteta has started him in, it probably tells you everything you need to know.

Granit Xhaka was previously used at left-back while Cedric Soares, who started at right-back against Palace, is another player who can use the left channel.

Then there’s someone like Bukayo Saka, although he’s more attacking, he came on the scene at left-back and is another option for the Gunners.

In any case, this call could be hugely significant for the north London club’s performance from now until the end of the season as it doesn’t look like Tierney is making a return.
