The New York Knicks are trying to free up captivity to attract Jalen Brunson this season, and they’ll need to raise around $25 million to do so.
It’s no secret that the Knicks need to land a guard post this summer, and landing Brunson will do just that. With the plan being offered him a four-year, $100 million contractthey will need to free up a bit more money for that.
Dumping Kemba Walker to the Pistons is a start, but additional moves are needed. As a result, the Knicks discussed a possible transfer of Nerlens Noel to the Clippers.
It was reported before the Knicks were exploring a Noel trade, but now more traction is coming from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
Noel trading gains traction
With Mitchell Robinson expected to return, Noel could be seen as more likely to spend, especially considering the Knicks have navigated most of this past season without him.
On the other hand, the Clippers are looking for a new hub and they can use Noel’s talents.
“The New York Knicks have had exploratory discussions about the Nerlens Noel trading center with the Los Angeles Clippers, federation sources told HoopsHype,” Scotto wrote. “Noel could match the Clippers’ $9.7 million trade exception generated by the previous Serge Ibaka deal. The Knicks have a surplus of draft compensation (22 picks total over the next seven years) to hang. “
If Noel leaves town, the Knicks will still have Robinson in case he returns as well as Taj Gibson (if he does) and Jericho Sims.
The Noel deal will be huge for the Knicks as it will allow them to unleash his $9.2 million salary next season, opening the door for Brunson to New York. Of course, landing Brunson wasn’t as simple as offering him a deal.
Will Brunson leave Dallas?
Brunson has multiple ties to New York that could entice him to join the Knicks. A prime example of that is Rick Brunson, his father, who is now a coach on the team, so he will be reunited with his family if he joins them.
However, the Mavericks are gearing up for a title race with the addition of Christian Wood. If they can keep Brunson above, the Mavs have a dangerous team going through next season.
Wood can elongate the floor slightly while adding sportiness to the central location. He will be able to catch steals from Luka Doncic, similar to Dwight Powell, but he will add a bit of offense.
If Brunson wants to take on more major roles somewhere, the Knicks would be a good choice for that, but if he wants an early championship then staying in Dallas would be better.
It was a tough decision for him, but no matter what he decides to do, he will be well rewarded. If the Knicks miss him, they will have to shift gears and land another guard.
