Knicks urged to pursue more all-star bodyguard than Jalen Brunson

Commercial Proposal Sends Jalen Brunson to Celtics

The New York Knicks are expected to bring the point guard into free agency as they have begun the process of freeing up cap space to sign a big name.

Shipping Kemba Walker to the Pistons on their draft day moved them closer to their reported goal of $25 million in cap space, which would then be used to sign a player. like Jalen Brunson.

Standing above Brunson, there seems to be another guard star that could hit the market in Kyrie Irving, and ESPN’s Brian Windhorst argues that could be what the team has in mind.

While Brunson may be the team’s top target, CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn argues the team should pursue another guardianand that’s the Spurs All-Star Dejounte Murray.

Change of plans?

While Quinn doesn’t say Brunson is a bad player, he thinks Murray is better. On top of that, he argued that Murray would be cheaper and leave some space on the table.

“I would rather drop the first four or five to get DeJounte Murray at $17 million per year than spend the first one or two more to sign Jalen Brunson for $25-30 million per year. five,” he wrote in response to a fan who wanted Murray over Brunson. “Murray is the better player.”

The problem with this is that Murray signed a 4-year extension back in 2019, so he’ll be an unrestricted free agent in 2024. This means the Knicks will need to make a bunch of trade-offs. options and potentially some young talent on the team.

Murray is also not a good deep-shot shooter, shooting 33% from three in his career, so he doesn’t tackle the team’s shooting woes exactly like Brunson would. There’s no doubt he was a fine player when he was selected to the All-Star team last season, but his suitability with the Knicks may raise some questions.

With RJ Barrett and Julius Randle both dominating the ball, adding another player to the squad with the same set of tools can be difficult, but the team needs to address the issue of defending its points with somehow.

There hasn’t been much movement on Brunson’s front since the draft outside the Knicks freed up space for him.

His high school coach Pat Ambrose said having Derrick Rose in New York could be a bargaining chip for the Knicks.

“Jalen will go to the Bulls facility and practice with the Bulls players,” Ambrose said via the New York Post. “That’s where he became good friends with Derrick Rose. So your story goes deep with the Knicks. Derrick saw that the young Jalen was a very, very good player and that Derrick was a Chicago kid, and actually started teaching Jalen about basketball. “

The Mavericks will likely struggle to get him back to Dallas, especially since they traded in Christian Wood to make the roster deeper. Luka Doncic is just improving, and it’s important for him to keep a strong supporting cast if Dallas is to fight for the championship.
