Kolo Toure praises ‘great talent’ on Arsenal’s transfer radar

Kolo Toure has praised Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as a “huge talent” after the Arsenal transfer target scored in his first start for England.

The 26-year-old was initially not called up by Gareth Southgate before an injury to Tammy Abraham opened the door for him and he took it with both hands as ex-Arsenal man Toure described him as “very intelligent” at his game.

Watkins is the all-around forward who can lead the line alone, play off the shoulder, hold the ball up, defend from the front, and play through the front three, mostly on the left.

With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar looming, Villa’s leading striker is one of the players fighting for his place.

He hasn’t done himself any harm by impressing on his last trip with the England squad as Toure brought the former Brentford man big Sky Sports Football (29/03/22 at 10:30 p.m.).

“He has great talent, this boy,” said Toure. “I like his attitude. Technically he’s decent.

“A very intelligent player. You can see on the goal he scored (for England). He thinks and reads the game. And that’s why he gets this moment and scores this goal. I really like this boy.”

Villa fans might hate to hear it, but it seems Watkins’ goalscoring talents have been on Arsenal’s radar and have been for some time.

Mikel Arteta is looking for a striker ahead of the next season in which they could potentially play Champions League football.

Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are the absolute options he has to choose from but they are out of contract in the summer making the upcoming transfer window even more important for the club.

Anyway, when the Gunners knock on Villa’s door the fee rises to £33m (Sky Sports) paid for Watkins will only be a gauge of what they want.

Also, with Steven Gerrard at the helm, as the money they’ve thrown on the market proves, Villa are seriously aspiring to get back into the top six.

So selling Watkins will probably get a slamming of the door, but at the end of the day it’s about money.
