After weeks of rumors linking Kyrie Irving to the Los Angeles Lakers, it looks like the NBA superstar is returning to the Brooklyn Nets. The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that Irving is opting for the final season on a four-year, $136.49 million contract, which will give him a $36.5 million salary for the 2022-23 season. The NBA insider added that Irving plans to play next season for the Nets and won’t push for an exchange with another team.
“Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving is picking his $37 million player pick for the 2022-23 season, @TheAthletic @Stadium learned,” Charania tweeted on June 27, 2022. “Irving is skipping multiple opt-in and transactional scenarios to fulfill his 4-year commitment to the Nets and Kevin Durant. “

Will Kyrie’s decision get rid of the Lakers?
Charania has reported that Irving is “ignoring many opt-in and trading scenarios,” so it seems likely that the Lakers are on hold for now. That said, it doesn’t rule out a potential change from Irving as we’ve seen him have during his time with the Celtics.
By opting into his current contract, Irving eliminates the possibility of signing with the Lakers because of the taxpayer exception. The former All-Star star also lost the leverage to take direct control of his future until he enters the 2023 season.
For the Lakers to have a chance of getting Irving, the keeper will have to push his move to Los Angeles. As things stand, Irving and LeBron James will both become free agents in 2023.
“Ordinary people keep the world going, but those who dare to be different will lead us to tomorrow” Irving told The Athletic. “I have decided to opt in. See you in the fall. A11even. “
Woj: Kyrie could not find a signing and trading partner
Based on ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Irving’s decision was primarily made after it was unable to find a signing and trading agreement for the Nets. By opting in, Irving will need the Nets to agree to the trade if he wants to play elsewhere in 2022-23.
Unable to find a signing and trading deal, Kyrie Irving plans to exercise his $36 million player option for next season and return to the Nets, sources confirm, Wojnarowski detailed on Twitter.
Prior to Irving’s opt-in decision, Wojnarowski reported that the Nets were “not interested in retrieving available Lakers packages.” The Lakers have been reluctant to trade Anthony Davis for Russell Westbrook as the team’s only realistic commercial option if they want to pursue Irving.
Los Angeles will likely need the involvement of a third team to get Irving to trade with Westbrook without any appeal to Brooklyn. According to Wojnarowski, the Lakers are the only team that has shown an interest in signing Irving.
Wojnarowski wrote on June 27. “Outside of the Los Angeles Lakers, no team is known to plan to pursue signings and commercials for Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving,” Wojnarowski wrote on June 27. June 27. “Irving needs a trading partner to coordinate the agreement on a deal to get a maximum, long-term contract, but only the Lakers have an interest in executing the signing and trading when the agency has a contract. The liberal service opened on Thursday night, sources said. The sources say that so far, the Nets have no interest in getting back the available Lakers packages. “
