There are many questions surrounding the Brooklyn Nets and their star defender Kyrie Irving about his future for the team.
After missing most of last season and then getting swept up in the knockout stages, it’s likely the team will look much different heading into the next season. The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports Irving and the Nets have come to an impasse, and that could lead to his eventual departure.
Shortly after, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski revealed a list of teams that Irving would consider including the Knicks, Mavericks, Clippers, Lakers, Sixers and Heat.
Fast-forward to June 27, and The Athletic’s Sam Amick reports that Irving is trying to find himself in the Lakers, and the other options could be noise.
Irving & LeBron together again?
It’s no secret that James and Irving have been talking backstage, and the buzz is now getting louder about a potential reunion.
During a conversation between Joe Vardon, Sam Amick and Alex Schiffer of The Athletic, Amick revealed Irving’s thoughts.
“Joe, there are sources very close to the situation that believe Irving is trying to make his way to the Lakers here and that everything else is just (necessary) noise,” he wrote. “I sense that James is very open to ideas, but the motivation is also somewhat subtle.”
Bringing Irving to Los Angeles could be as simple as Irving opting out of his contract and signing with the Lakers for $6 million.
If he comes to trade, then things get a little more complicated because Russell Westbrook is in LA with a huge contract.
“There’s a guy named Russell Westbrook who’s still on the Lakers’ plans and who has his own player selection deadline (worth $47.1 million) that everyone thinks he’s going to pick. by the Wednesday deadline,” Amick said. “The Lakers can’t make an already sensitive situation worse by acting like he’s about to be replaced by Irving. Especially if it doesn’t actually happen. “
The Westbrook deal for Irving may not have been worth much to it, despite the fact that Durant and Westbrook played together in Oklahoma City.
Any Thunder fan hoping for a Westbrook and Durant reunion shouldn’t hold out.
“Most people around the league assume the Nets won’t be interested in facilitating a Westbrook-Durant reunion, but there are others who believe it could be the best of the options. bad choice in front of them,” Amick said. “
This is by no means impossible, but it is unlikely, especially when you consider the fact Ben Simmons will be back next season. Having Westbrook and Simmons together in the lineup would create a gaping nightmare, and the Nets want to avoid that if they can.
At this point, there’s no telling how the season will unfold, but there’s definitely going to be some flare in Kyrie Irving’s story to come.
