Laboratory-grown meat, FDA-approved for human consumption

The Food and Drug Administration announced that it has given a California company, Upside, permission to sell “slaughter-free” chicken that’s been raised in a lab.

Upside makes “cell-cultured meat” from biopsies of live animals and “recently slaughtered animals that were already part of the food system,” according to the FDA. The company posits that these cells will be able to self-renew indefinitely, eventually “breaking down” all animal-derived components.

The historic move is just one step closer to Americans eating lab-grown meat on a regular basis. The approval affects restaurant menus and grocery shelves in the United States.

in one FDA statement On Nov. 16, the agency said it had completed an evaluation of Upside Foods chicken and had “no further questions” about the product’s safety. The agency added that they considered the lab-grown meat safe for consumption. It will likely take months, if not longer, for the product to reach consumers and additional approval from the Department of Agriculture will first need to be obtained.

“This is tremendous for the industry,” said Liz Specht, vice president of science and technology at the Good Food Institute, a nonprofit focused on cell- and plant-based meats.

“For the first time ever, the FDA has given the green light to a cultured meat product.”

The FDA wants to support more lab-based meat companies

The FDA added that there was room for more lab-based meat companies. In their statement, the administration said they are “ready to work with additional companies developing cultured animal cell feed and production processes to ensure their products are safe and lawful to their standards.” They also plan to issue guidance to support companies planning to make human food from cultured animal cells.

We are already in discussions with several companies about various types of products made from cultured animal cells, including those made from marine animal cells, which are regulated exclusively by the FDA. We continue to encourage companies to engage with us frequently and early in their product development phase, well before they submit anything to us.
