LaShawn McNeil was named a suspect charged with shooting a New York police officer to death and leave another officer clinging to life.

In a statementThe New York Police Department identified the deceased officer as Jason Rivera. He was only 22 years old then.

As McNeil tried to get out of the apartment, the third officer shot him in the right arm and head.

As I stand here in Harlem hospital tonight, one New York City cop has lost his life, murdered, and another is fighting for his life to survive. The pain their family is going through cannot be put into words.

3. McNeil has a history of arrests for weapons & drug offenses

McNeil, 47, had previously been arrested in New York City on drug charges since 2003 and is being placed on probation for the offense, according to police.

He was arrested four times outside of New York City. A person in South Carolina since 1998 for illegal possession of a firearm. One was the attack on a police officer in Pennsylvania in 2002. The other was the 2003 Pennsylvania felony and misdemeanor drug arrests.

Sewell said that five officers were shot in New York City in four incidents, praising the “courage and sacrifice of the NYPD.”
