LaShawn McNeil was named a suspect charged with shooting a New York police officer to death and leave another officer clinging to life.

In a statementThe New York Police Department identified the deceased officer as Jason Rivera. He was only 22 years old then.

“Tonight, one NYPD officer lost his life — murdered — and another was seriously injured. The pain is incomprehensible for their loved ones, the officers and NYC. Praying for the family of our young officer and for his life partner who is on his deathbed fighting for his life,” Written New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell on Twitter.

In a press conference, Sewell said that the three officers who responded to the deadly final call for service was to “listen to a mother calling for help to her son. The home is described as an open-plan one-bedroom apartment with a 35-foot hallway with a bedroom at the end. One officer stayed with two family members while two other officers went into the back bedroom. Police described the corridor as very narrow and narrow.

They say McNeil threw open the door and fired multiple shots, hitting both officers, killing one and leaving one in critical condition.

As McNeil tried to get out of the apartment, the third officer shot him in the right arm and head.

She added: “I am struggling to find words to describe the tragedy we are enduring. We are mourning, and we are angry. NYPD. New York City. All of us. As I stand here in Harlem hospital tonight, one New York City cop has lost his life, murdered, and another is fighting for his life to survive. The pain their family is going through cannot be put into words.

3. McNeil has a history of arrests for weapons & drug offenses

McNeil, 47, had previously been arrested in New York City on drug charges since 2003 and is being placed on probation for the offense, according to police.

He was arrested four times outside of New York City. A person in South Carolina since 1998 for illegal possession of a firearm. One was the attack on a police officer in Pennsylvania in 2002. The other was the 2003 Pennsylvania felony and misdemeanor drug arrests.

Police recovered a Glock .45 with a high-capacity magazine that holds up to 40 additional rounds. They say the gun was stolen in Baltimore in 2017 and that they are still working to track it down.

They called it a “brutal, mindless, ambush by two of our officers.”

Sewell said that five officers were shot in New York City in four incidents, praising the “courage and sacrifice of the NYPD.”

New York Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference, “We must save this city together; That’s what we have to do.”

He also mentioned “five officers” who “were shot in this city.”

Adams said there are no gun manufacturers in New York City. “We don’t make guns here,” he said.
