Law enforcement are cracking down on drunk drivers this Mardi Gras season

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The countdown to Shrove Tuesday is on and the ‘good times are rolling’ Mothers against drunk driving asks that everyone celebrate safely.

“We want you to have fun. And if drinking is part of it, that’s fine too,” said Valerie Cox, MADD Victim Service Specialist.

Cox explained that there are a number of resources available to individuals who wish to drink during the Mardi Gras celebrations. Some of these services include Uber and Lyft.

“We’re just asking you to have a plan before you have that first drink. We ask that your good times do not become someone else’s nightmare,” Cox said.

Christian Reed, Public Information Officer for Louisiana State Police said that one dead is way too many.

“We know that during this carnival season approximately 507 people were injured and 10 people died, with at least one rider impaired,” Reed said.

That’s why the campaign “Drive sober or be stopped” will be enforced until Shrove Tuesday.

Officials will set up sobriety checkpoints to find those who chose to get behind the wheel after drinking.

Reed said they are being proactive “to make sure everyone gets home safely.”
