Arsenal’s All or Nothing documentary was finally released last week and it’s fair to say that some of Mikel Arteta’s management methods have had a mixed reception.

Arteta has been the subject of more than a few jokes after some of his methods were caught on camera.

In fact, some were less than impressed with the way Arteta tried to motivate some of his players and one moment in particular stood out.

Before a game, Arteta used cartoon drawings of a heart and a brain to try to upset some of his players, but the speech seemed to fall pretty flat.

However, after analyzing the scene, Lee Dixon has defended Arteta, claiming that the speech was edited to look cheesier.

what was said

Dixon championed Arteta Sailor Says Podcast.

“I understand that, but if you’re looking at this, here’s my media head. If you look at the whiteboard when he starts, there is a heart and a brain. Then it cuts to the players and back to him and there’s a lot of writing on the pad that he did in the speech. They edited it out so the context felt a bit like that wouldn’t work, but the actual speech was 20 minutes long so it looks a bit cheesy, but if you were in the dressing room it would be more inspirational, and I’m standing up for Arteta here,” said Dixon.

Not enough time on the show

Dixon’s comments highlight the main problem with these sports documentaries.

In a work week, so many hours are put into preparing for each and every game, but with just one hour on any given episode, we only see a snapshot of what the team is up to and how the manager is preparing.

Arteta’s team talks were summed up in this series, and while they don’t look all that special after editing, Dixon says, the full speech might have been more inspirational.

We certainly can’t fully judge Arteta on the back of this series.
