Flynn Downes insists he ‘does not take note’ of reports linking the Swansea City star with Premier League side Leeds United, Speaking to Wales Online.
A £1.5million midfielder, who played third tier football with Ipswich Town a year ago, isn’t exactly the kind of signing to make hair stand on end in West Yorkshire.
But those overwhelmed by links to Downes are missing the point.
The former England Under-20 international is not only made for a club like Leeds, he is also made for a manager like Jesse Marsch. Downes’ boundless enthusiasm, tremendous work pace and impressive technical ability make him the archetype of the marching midfielder.
Flynn Downes to Leeds?
The times suggested he could replace Kalvin Phillips should the so-called ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ depart. But Downes’ box-to-box, ball-carrying manner could make him a ready successor to aging Adam Forshaw and Matuesz Klich instead.
Not that Downes is paying much attention to rumors that he could be back on the road after just a year in South Wales.
“I don’t take any notice of things like that to be honest,” said the 23-year-old when asked about Leeds’ interest.
“I know every player says the same thing, but I actually didn’t pay attention. When I was at Ipswich I felt like I paid too much attention to what was going on and I really learned from it and swore to myself I wouldn’t be like that again.
“So I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and focus on my football.”
Downes, who was the subject of two offers from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2020 and has made a transfer request in a failed attempt to force a move, has been described as an “absolutely incredible” talent by Swansea captain Matt Grimes (Daily Mail).
Head coach Russell Martin, meanwhile, expects further interest in the coming weeks.
Stay in place?
“It’s football and anything can happen,” added Downes. “But I love it here and I’m happy here. Next year I have high hopes for what we can achieve, so I’m not thinking about anything else. I’ve always said it’s a dream to play in the Premier League, I really want to do that.
“There is more to life than money. I love my football down here.”
