‘Legend of Zelda’ movie in the works – The Hollywood Reporter
The Legend of Zelda goes on the big screen. After the $1 billion hit Super Mario Bros. Moviethe gaming company is developing a project with Sony.
Wes Ball, the director behind that Maze runner Trilogy and the upcoming one Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, will direct the live-action feature, with Sony handling distribution. Nintendo and Avi Arad’s Arad Productions, Inc. will produce the film, which is co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Nintendo video game designer and director Shigeru Miyamoto Posted Tuesday told X (formerly Twitter) that he and Arad have been working on a live-action film version “for many years.”

Zelda is a crown jewel of the Nintendo empire, dating back to the first game in 1986. The thousands of years old fantasy games usually tell the story of a boy named Link who has to save the kingdom of Hyrule and its princess. the titular Zelda, who is sometimes a hero in her on the right. Link must defeat the evil Ganon, who wants to collect all three pieces of the Triforce to gain ultimate power.
The games have been known for pushing the boundaries of both story and technology since 2017 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel in 2022 Tears of the Kingdom is considered one of the best video games of all time. There have been 20 games in the main series so far, including a Breath of the Wild Continued in development.
Nintendo is extremely protective of its properties and has not released a film adaptation since 1993 Super Mario Bros., the critically panned film in which Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo played the famous plumbers. Netflix has tried to get a legend from before Zelda I pitched an animated series and put it into development in 2015, but it never came to fruition. Previously, it was adapted as an American animated series in 1989.
