On March 8, a newly appointed principal in Kentucky issued a memo promoting “high standards for all,” announcing his arrival to the entire community. On March 13, his first day at Frederick Law Olmsted Academy North, Leroy Littles Sr. was served with a warrant and arrested on a misdemeanor terrorist threat case dating back to Christmas Day.
The longtime English teacher and behavioral coach for Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) in Louisville is charged with third-degree terrorism and fourth-degree assault, both Class A offenses. Under Kentucky law, such offenses carry a maximum sentence of 12 months in prison .
Kentucky law states that a person commits a third-degree terrorist threat if they threaten to commit “a crime which is likely to result in the death or serious physical injury of another person, or is likely to result in significant property damage to another person.” . Fourth-degree assault is when a person “willfully or willfully causes physical harm to another person” or recklessly “causes another person to suffer physical harm with a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument.”
WDRB reported that the Bullitt County warrant was executed by the Hillview Police Department. According to the report, Littles allegedly attacked his girlfriend’s ex on Christmas Day:
According to a Hillview police report, a man was leaving his house with his ex-girlfriend when her new boyfriend pulled over Littles and started arguing with her. Littles is said to have attacked the man, leaving injuries to his face and head.
The victim was examined at the scene by paramedics and told to go to a hospital for treatment.
Littles also reportedly said, “I know where you live, motherf— I’ll be back.”
According to the report, the victim had video evidence of the attack and photos of the resulting injuries to her head and ribs, leading to an arrest warrant issued on December 28.
As late as March 8, the school district praised Littles for his “ability to connect with the young men, their families and the staff of Olmsted North” and announced him as the new principal.
“His wide range of educational experience and successful leadership opportunities will enable him to make an immediate impact,” said Dr. Nate Meyer, Assistant Superintendent for Accelerated Improvement Schools.
Littles himself was quoted as touting his “three core beliefs,” namely: “high standards for all,” a “decrease [in] Barriers and inequities for marginalized students” and promoting an “inclusive environment where students and staff feel supported and belonged”.
“I am excited, honored and privileged to begin the next chapter of my educational journey as Principal of Frederick Law Olmsted Academy North,” added Littles.
In a letter to the parents, Dr. Meyer reports that the charges have nothing to do with any activities at the school and that Deputy Principal Ebony Booker is now the chief officer at Olmsted Academy North.
Law&Crime emailed the district inquiring about Littles’ employment status. Local reporting said only that the district is currently following protocols for dealing with allegations against one of its own, suggesting Littles is on leave pending further investigation.
In a brief phone call to Law&Crime, Bullitt County Commonwealth Attorney Bailey Taylor noted that this office only prosecutes crimes and that the misdemeanor case is being handled by Bullitt County Attorney Tammy Baker.
Citing court filings, Taylor said the misdemeanor case was scheduled for arraignment March 29 at 9 a.m. in Judge Jennifer Porter’s courtroom.
It’s not immediately clear if Littles has an attorney on the matter.
