Leveling Up Fund bid for Gamble Building work unsuccessful

A bid by the LEVELING Up Fund to refurbish the Gamble Building was unsuccessful, St Helens Council has confirmed.

The bid was submitted for the second round of the Government Leveling Up Fund to fund the internal work needed to restore the iconic Victoria Square building.

The Gamble Building closed in 2017 due to structural problems and work was carried out on the 127-year-old building, including new windows, brickwork restoration, terracotta repairs and roof work.

However, in announcing the successful £20m bid for Earlestown’s redevelopment plans, the council confirmed that the bid for the interior of The Gamble was unsuccessful.

However, the council added that it remains committed to the project and is expected to seek other streams of funding with regeneration partners.

In a statement released by the council, he briefly acknowledged: “Unfortunately, a second bid to fund The Gamble building was unsuccessful, but the council has reiterated its commitment to the building’s transformation project.”

St Helens Council Chairman David Baines said: “While this is fantastic news for Earlestown, we are disappointed that our other bid to support the redevelopment of The Gamble in St Helens city center was unsuccessful.

“However, it has always been clear to us that The Gamble is an important St Helens redevelopment project and we will continue to work towards the implementation of this exciting program through alternative financing arrangements. “Our commitment was demonstrated by last week’s approval of the fourth phase of the project.

“This involves developing designs for the interior of the building, which has already benefited from external fabric repair work.

“We remain committed to preserving and enhancing this gem in downtown St Helens and look forward to seeing the final plans for its future.”

Phase four will see multi-disciplinary consultancy services in phases two and three of the Royal Institute of British Architects focused on the conceptual design and spatial coordination of the Gamble Building before the internal construction program can begin.
