The Detroit Lions have plenty of players they hope can bring their next step forward in the 2022 season, and the best ones seem to be on the defensive side.

With abundant youth, there is no shortage of players whom the Lions hope will turn a new leaf and all goes well, and one of the best answers as it concerns a young player who has had a big year as defensive midfielder Levi Onwuzurike.

It sounds like Onwuzurike is ready to turn a new leaf, and the Lions are ready to help him do it. Those facts are keeping players on the radar for some of this season about someone who will become a major breakout star in 2022.

Such was the case with NFL.com and writer Adam Rank. Recently, Rank reviewed the franchise situation for Lions in a new season, and Onwuzurike has made some big strides.

“The second-year pro player showed some bright spots as a rookie, but hasn’t been healthy for many years. Luckily, it looks like he’s putting those matters behind his back…. Either way, I predict there will be a point this season where Onwuzurike ends up as a defensive geek,” Rank wrote in this section.

Once a second-round pick in 2021, Onwuzurike was modest on the pitch last season, but all of that could change this year according to the Rankings.

Onwuzurike excited to match new defense

Meeting with the media on Wednesday, May 11, Onwuzurike discussed some of the prep work for the new season, his second year in the league. A big focus he revealed is gaining some extra muscle, and that move could help prepare him for Detroit’s new defence, which may be better suited to his attacking style in the trenches.

“Levi Onwuzurike says he’s increased his muscle mass this season and is really looking forward to Detroit’s new offensive scheme on defense,” Twentyman tweeted.

Onwuzurike’s excitement about such a defensive move is telling, and possibly exciting for the Lions themselves. His ability to put pressure on the pocket and give chase in time could prove important to the Lions, and his bravery could be applauded for that group. Onwuzurike feels like he’s the perfect man to come out and make some plays, and if he gets stronger, that could aid him very well in his pursuit.

As off-season health projects roll in, this can be a big project to keep in mind for Detroit. It looks like Onwuzurike feels comfortable and ready for 2022, and that’s great news for the Lions defense that the team hopes can revive.

Onwuzurike Stats & Highlights

The Lions need some big help in the trenches and Onwurzurike could theoretically provide that for the present and the future. He collected 95 tackles during college, including 16 lost tackles and 7 sack hits. Onwurzurike opted out of the 2020 season, but he performed well in 2019 when he last played. The teams looking for Onwuzurike probably looked at his physical ability and toughness in the trenches and developed into an outstanding player in the midfield.

In Detroit, Onwuzurike began to show signs of his ability on the field. So far this season, he has collected a total of 9 tackles and showed some explosive tackles he did in college as he won his first bag on Days. Thanksgiving:

Over time, the Lions hoped that the Onwuzurike would grow into a force. That could happen as early as 2022 with some changes to both players and defense that he guesses will star. Some are even seeing the next step taken next season.
