Lewiston, Maine, football team wins state title weeks after mass shooting
The boys’ high school soccer team in the Maine town where a mass shooting occurred more than two weeks ago has won the state championship. The Lewiston Blue Devils defeated Deering 3-2 in the Class A boys soccer state championship game on Saturday. Shootings at a bowling alley and a nearby bar on Oct. 25 in Lewiston left 18 people dead and 13 others injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in the history of Maine. “We’ve been saying for the last few weeks, ‘Do it for the city,'” Lewiston goaltender Payson Goyette told the Sun Journal. “It feels great to win for the city and bring something good to the city.” With about a minute left in the first overtime, Tegra Mbele scored his second goal of the game to give the Blue Devils the win. After the goal, Mbele was greeted by his teammates and some spectators in what the coach described as “euphoric” celebration. “It was the joy we gave the fans that drove them crazy,” Mbele told the newspaper. “We just wanted to give back to the city for everything it’s been through. It brings great joy to me and everyone who made it possible.”
