Liverpool have included Rhys Williams in Tuesday’s Champions League training session ahead of their home game against Benfica – although Jurgen Klopp has yet to give him his first senior appearance of the season.
Williams, 21, broke into the Liverpool side last season with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip injured – he made 19 appearances for Klopp’s side. He was loaned to Swansea last summer after all three returned from injury.
However, the England Under-21 international struggled in Wales – he only made seven appearances for the Championship team. He returned in January and has since played for the club’s under-23 side – even as captain.
But adding to his 19 appearances last season, this time he was spotted in a video of Tuesday’s training session ahead of Wednesday’s second leg against Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Williams in Benfica training: Could Liverpool man be there?
After returning to Liverpool in January, Williams was not included in any senior squad. Klopp has the three central defenders mentioned above, plus Ibrahima Konate – signed from RB Leipzig last summer.
But Klopp is a Williams fan – and described him as “extraordinary” last season. by destination. So could he be included in the page? All four centre-back options except Williams are fit – but you can name 12 substitutes in Europe.
So it could be that Williams finally gets his first senior cap for Liverpool this season. However, it is unlikely that he will actually come.
