M62 chaos as overnight truck fire causes motorway closure

SHOCKING images have shown the aftermath of a lorry fire that caused a section of the M62 to be closed this morning (Tuesday 31 January).

The incident took place around 9pm last night (Monday 30 January) and involved a burning lorry between J7 and J8, causing the M62 to be closed to eastbound traffic. It will remain closed this morning.

“Complex salvage operations” are underway and emergency teams were on site overnight.

A spokesman for National Highways said: “The M62 in Merseyside is closed between J7 (St Helens) and J8 (Burtonwood) eastbound due to an earlier lorry fire.

“The vehicle is currently being recovered, which is expected to take several hours. Once the salvage is complete, the road will be inspected and emergency rehabilitation work will be carried out.”

A detour route has been set up. A section of the eastbound lane is also closed at Junction 10 to the Croft Interchange due to an accident this morning. Two trucks were involved in J10 M6 J21A (Croft Interchange).

Emergency services are present.
