PARIS – The inflationary shock fueled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has heightened concerns among French voters who fear citizens can no longer match the living standards of previous generations – a phenomenon known as le grand déclassement.
The growing malaise has increased public support for far-right and far-left candidates in election after election. The wave of voter dissatisfaction with the political establishment has now risen to levels that are testing the very foundations of French democracy.
