Dancing With the Stars couple Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd shared some sad news with fans in their latest social media posts – Murgatroyd had to fly back to Australia due to a “family emergency”.

Here’s what we know so far:

Maks Chmerkovskiy says a “family emergency” forced him to cancel judging a dance competition

In an Instagram postChmerkovskiy apologized the World Dance Organization (WDO) and the Naples Openan international dance competition being held in Naples, Italy, because he had to cancel judging the competition due to a “family emergency”.

“I am absolutely disappointed not to be able to be with you all this weekend. @petamurgatroyd and I have a family emergency that changed all our plans and made it impossible for me to travel,” Chmerkovskiy wrote.

He added:

To the organizers, my only wish for you is an incredible, trouble-free event. Thank you for the invitation and I really hope to participate in the future.

To my fellow judges, it’s always a great honor to share the sidelines with you all and I can’t wait to be with you all again soon!

To all dancers, if you know me personally you know that I’m a huge fan of dancers, especially when they’re showcasing their art, especially when they’re performing at their best in highly competitive events. I will miss watching you all, especially fighting for World Ballroom Latin supremacy during the WDO World Professional Latin Championship. Break a leg, clear your head and put on a great show!

Chmerkovskiy concluded: “Family comes first, even if it changes your plans. With love, Maks.”

Peta Murgatroyd has flown to her family in Australia

Taking to her Instagram Stories, Murgatroyd shared with her followers that she had to fly home to her native country of Australia.

“In Melbourne waiting for the connecting flight to Perth,” she wrote in her stories. “I really can’t wait to see my fam. Bro will pick me up from the airport.” She added that she misses Maks and her son Shai.

Murgatroyd elaborated a bit on that in an Instagram Live Q&AShe told her fans: “I’m going to Australia tonight, I have some stuff to do in Australia with my dad, so I’m going for a week.”

The professional dancer previously informed her followers that her father had an illness that she did not disclose. In May 2022, she wrote on her Instagram stories: “I flew to Australia to be with my family. Sorry I was MIA I just don’t have it in me to be here now. My dad isn’t well so I just want to spend every minute with him and of course my mum and brother.”

In a separate Instagram story, she shared how hard it was missing Mother’s Day with her son, but she really needed that family time away from her husband and son so she could be more present to her dad.

“I missed [Shai] terrible, but I wouldn’t have had the same experience with my family if I had also been there as a mother and wife,” said the dancer. “I was just there as Peta, the sister and the daughter, and we said to each other as we all sat in the living room with my brother Sam, ‘It hasn’t happened in over 10 years, which is quite something. Maybe even 15. The last time we all sat in the living room together, just the four of us, it’s been so long and it’s sad.”

She later added: “My experience would not have been the same [with Maks and Shai there]and I’m glad I did it without my other family so I could have that really special time that I may not get back.

Murgatroyd and her father are obviously close. She posted on Father’s Day 2020 a tribute to him on Instagram along with a series of photos of them and she captioned it: “I love you so much. you mean the world to me Happy Father’s Day to the best dad and one who has always shown me love and guidance through kindness and selflessness. I can’t wait to see you again.”
