A Georgia man has been charged with murder shoot death of a teenager who died in 2019, two years after she was shot in the neck in 2017, although the shooting was described as accidental.
Ny’Khia SampsonShe, affectionately called “Black Beauty” in her obituary, was just 15 years old when she was critically wounded by a gunman and her death was largely ignored by the press.
She was kept alive for two years before finally dying at the age of 17.
Five years after the fatal shooting Kedrick Tyrese Reynolds23, is charged with her death despite having been held in custody for the past five years for providing false information about herself to police and for violating his probation conditions in another count.
The shooting of a teenage girl was accidental when the gun was fired while she was handing it to the gunman
Corresponding The Macon Telegraph, Sampson, Reynolds and a two-year-old child were at an apartment in Fort Lauderdale on November 21, 2017 when Bibb County Sheriff’s Deputies said she was “handling a firearm reportedly belonging to Reynolds.” As Reynolds took the gun from Sampson, the gun discharged and hit Sampson in the neck.”
It remains unclear how Sampson and Reynolds may have known each other, but her obituary describes her death as “accidental.”
Despite the accidental nature of the shooting, MPs went on to say Reynolds provided investigators with facts about the shooting that “were not determined to be true,” reports the Telegraph.
Shooter charged with double felony murder ‘regardless of malicious intent’
Earlier this week, a grand jury indicted him on two counts of murder, with prosecutors claiming the shooting resulted in the girl’s death 28 months later, “malice notwithstanding.”
Reynolds received the two murder charges in part because he was a first-time offender on probation and had been convicted of marijuana possession six months before the shooting.
One of the conditions of his parole was that he must stay away from guns at all times. According to the Telegraph, Reynolds was “within range” of a .380 caliber pistol with which Sampson was shot and a 9mm Glock pistol.
Authorities didn’t say why it was nearly five years before Reynolds was charged with Sampson’s murder, but her death in March 2020 came amid the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to widespread legal backlogs across the country.
The victim’s cousin opens a clothing store in her honor after being shot to death
An online memorial to Ny’Khia can be found here.
Meanwhile, one of Sampson’s cousins, Rodreeka Murry, eventually opened a clothing store in her honor called Khia’s Kloset Collections in Macon, according to a WMAZ report last year.
Murry told the store that the store is unique in the type of clothing items it offers, alongside the meaning of the store’s name.
She added that most of the clothing items sold in the store are “something you would find in Ny’Khia’s closet”.
Murry said that Ny’Khia always looked up to her and was her biggest role model.
