Man killed after falling onto subway tracks during platform fight

A man died after falling onto train tracks and being hit by a train during a fight in which one of the two combatants dropped a cellphone on the tracks below, police officers say.
In another deadly incident in New York’s transit system, authorities said two men collided on the platform of the Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights station around 6 p.m. Monday, amid the evening commuter rush NBC New York.
A cell phone belonging to the suspect fell on the tracks. and he asked the victim to get it.

The other man refused to retrieve it, prompting the two to fight. The victim, identified as 48-year-old Heriberto Quintana, ended up on the tracks as a train pulled into the station.
Quintana was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he died, police said.

The other man involved in the brawl, described as a 50-year-old man, was taken into police custody.
Authorities are now reviewing surveillance footage to determine if the suspect pushed Quintana off the platform or if he fell alone.
No charges had been filed as of Tuesday.
Quintana’s death triggered massive delays on the E/F/M/R lines and into Queens. The Long Island Rail Road eventually caught up on some of the slack, honoring MetroCard holders in both directions.

The incident was the ninth death in the subway system this year and the fifth in the transit system in the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, three other people have been stabbed since September 30, two in subway attacks and a third on a city bus.
A man was pushed onto the train tracks in the Bronx on Saturday (October 15), with police saying the attack was unprovoked. Surveillance video released the next day shows the unidentified attacker approaching the man before pushing him onto the tracks ahead of the arrival of an arriving 6 train, according to the outlet.
The man in that incident luckily survived after a group of Good Samaritans helped him get off the tracks and back onto the platform. The suspect in this case has yet to be caught.
