Derby County manager Wayne Rooney said he turned down an interview with Everton in hopes he would one day take over Manchester United.

talk to the sunthe championship manager and former Toffee superstar, revealed he was approached by his boyhood club about the vacant managerial position following Rafa Benitez’s sacking, but Rooney declined the opportunity for an interview.

According to the all-time England goalscorer, Rooney is instead eyeing the job at United to return to Everton as the 36-year-old manager is several years away from taking on a club as big as the Red Devils.

While a return to Goodison Park would have been a fairytale return for Rooney, his lack of management experience would have made him a risky option to take on such a high-profile job, with Frank Lampard being cast for the role instead.

However, Rooney’s recent comments seem to suggest the England manager has bigger ambitions than just Everton in his coaching career, with the Championship boss already eyeing a return to United in the years to come.

As Rooney continues to battle with Derby for relegation, the thought of the England legend one day managing United seems unrealistic for now. However, a return to Everton in the next year or two seems a plausible move.

Finally, Rooney has a strong connection with Everton due to his love of the club and with Lampard’s time at the Toffees coming to an end the former United striker could be ideal as a project manager for Goodison Park Club.
