Mark Lawrenson claims Wenger and Arsenal

Mark Lawrenson has claimed Arsenal have ‘not really changed’ since the days of Arsène Wenger. as he said off the ball.

After comfortably finishing fourth in the Premier League table, Arsenal have lost back-to-back games as Lawrenson believes bad habits from his days under Wenger still haven’t left them.

Under the Frenchman, the north London club became a soft touch in the Premier League towards the end of his tenure.

Away, the players would lack fighting power and if they were strong in a certain position, they couldn’t be trusted to hold it.

Lawrenson believes those troubles, which began just before Wenger’s departure, linger to this day under Mikel Arteta.

“Arsenal did exactly what Arsenal does,” Lawrenson said. “They had a really good run, then we’re like, ‘Oh, they’re going to finish fourth and do it easily’.

“Then they lose games. Palace removed, they didn’t appear. Brighton home for the weekend. I wouldn’t say they didn’t show up. But they didn’t start with a fire.

“In the end they will finish, but that is what Arsenal have been doing since the end of Wenger’s reign. That’s how they were.

“They haven’t really changed. Great when they play well. Nice to look at. But sometimes, when they really have to fight and make it difficult for the opposition, they don’t seem to have it. Tottenham can be like that too.”

Those final years of Wenger were pretty toxic and it was a shame how it all turned out.

But some Arsenal fans probably wish they weren’t as critical as they were then because they would at least play Champions League football on a regular basis.

They’ve hinted at that for a number of years, including the fact that they haven’t played in Europe at all this season.

This latest clash is huge for the Gunners, including the north London derby, as if they screw up this one the reaction to Arteta will not be pleasant.

In other news, the £56million star turned down the Tottenham transfer for very emotional reasons – and it has paid off
