Martha Menefield82, opened her door to two Alabama police officers on Nov. 27. Valley Police Department officers were there to arrest her, warrant in hand, on an unpaid $77.80 water bill.
More than 1,000 donations have now been received, exceeding Menefield’s fundraising goal of $25,000. Although she started GoFundMe about four days ago, so it is already raised over $31,900.
“[The water bill] has now been paid but I have incurred expenses with my home and some vision problems and could use some help. Thank God for everyone who wants to help and I appreciate it all. May God bless him,” says Martha’s GoFundMe.
Over the weekend, bodycam footage showed an officer handcuffing a distraught Menefield, who was wearing a short-sleeved purple T-shirt.
Before the arrest, Martha said her daughter would handle the bills, but the police had denied it “She didn’t do it.” Menefield looked at the warrant, opened her phone, and repeatedly expressed confusion. Meanwhile, the officer explained that the city police should have sent her a notification about a month ago. Then the officer told Martha that she had to pay $285 “Get out of the PD or go to the county jail.”
