Martin Keown shared what he saw during commentary on BT Sport at half-time as Liverpool drew against Benfica. After a poor first half, Keown said the coaches really listened to the players in the warm-up ahead of the second 45.
Liverpool played brilliantly going forward at Anfield but were lousy defensively – allowing Benfica to score three goals that night. It ended 3-3, Roberto Fimino’s brace and Ibrahima Konate’s attempt were nullified.
Goncalo Ramos, Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Nunez scored for Benfica. With the score 1-1 at half-time and Liverpool far from their best after a few changes from Jürgen Klopp, the coaches were unhappy.
That’s according to Keown, who noted the coaches really “gave in” on the Liverpool players during the half-time warm-up just before the start of the second half. He said he assumes Klopp wasn’t happy at the break.
“I’m pretty sure Jurgen Klopp was in their ears at half-time. It was quite interesting to see them warm up just before the start of the second half, the coaches really approached the players,” Keown told BT Sport.
Keown on Liverpool: Why were the Reds so defensive against Benfica?
Klopp made three changes to his defensive line – bringing in Joe Gomez, Konstantinos Tsimikas and Konate for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk. Consistency was thrown out the window.
But even then, the Reds weren’t expected to deliver three goals. The high line has been exploited – by the likes of Yaremchuk and Nunez, the latter of whom will have shown numerous applicants what he is capable of.
