After reaching the NBA Finals last season, the Boston Celtics have focused their efforts on improving their roster before next year. Brad Stevens has made multiple moves, including signing veteran striker Danilo Gallinari in free agency and trading for combo defender Malcolm Brogdon.

However, in the Brogdon exchange, Stevens changed five players – Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Malik Fitts, Nik Stauskas and Juwan Morgan. In turn, they currently have several slots on the open roster and will look to fill them for the rest of the summer.

One player they could be looking to fill one of those positions is wing Matt Ryan. The 25-year-old stood out in the Summer League with an impressive display that ended with a game that sealed the victory. And according to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, he could fit into Boston’s squad.

“His defense on the ball is more solid, although he is not an air threat [Brodric] Thomas is. If Boston wants someone they know they can bring out to impose themselves on the game, Ryan seems like the better choice. He just came out with unbridled confidence, and you can feel him out there more than almost anyone else on the Summer League roster,” Weiss wrote on July 20.

The wing’s three-pointers-led game was only enhanced by his amazing story, which he detailed after his winning shot in the Summer League.

Ryan: ‘It was pretty emotional’

After Ryan hit hit the game against the Milwaukee Bucks, he was interviewed by the media and asked about his journey. The 25-year-old had tears in his eyes as he talked about his journey, as just a year ago he was living at home and driving for DoorDash.

“It was quite emotional. It’s been a crazy 11 months,” Ryan said, fighting back tears. “I have been at home for a year and a half. I don’t know if you’ve heard my story, but [I was] driving Door Dash a year ago. To be here, to be part of the Boston Celtics squad, it’s been special. “

Despite appearing in only two games in the Summer League, Ryan still delivers impressive numbers. In those games, playing 22.9 minutes per night, he averaged 19.0 points and 1.5 rebounds with 55.0% shot from the field and 52.6% shot from behind the three-point line.

The Summer League standout was signed to a two-way deal with the Celtics in the second half of the season following Boston’s transfer deadline, and now, he finds himself with a real chance to make it into the starting XI. .

Ryan’s Shot makes him stand out

In addition to “unbridled confidence,” Weiss noted Ryan’s three-point versatility and ability to bombard a tough defense as two standout areas of his game in the Summer Split.

Weiss explains: “While Thomas has the upper hand when it comes to being a dynamic forward player, Matt Ryan shows he can shoot at volume and create his own perimeter look. “Ryan can go deep into the third round, can find his way into defenders to move back and just bury a 30-meter-tall defender with a defender right behind him. Thomas looks good on the opener, but Ryan shoots through difficult tackles or just defends tight with composure.”

With only 3 spots available, Ryan is sure to have competition, but based on what he’s shown in the Summer League, he could have a real chance of making the main roster.
