After a long offseason, the Dallas Mavericks basketball is almost back. Their preseason schedule begins on October 5th, and they begin the regular season just two weeks later on October 19th. And like every year, the Mavericks made some changes this summer.
They weren’t all great this time. Dallas lost Jalen Brunson by free hand, and while Spencer Dinwiddie was supposed to effectively replace him in the starting group, they still didn’t replace his overall performance. That being said, the Mavericks have strengthened their forecourt by adding Christian Holz and JaVale McGee.
Both Wood and McGee will play big roles for the Mavericks, joining a frontcourt of Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell. Although they will all be big factors in Dallas’ game plan, the show’s star is a bit confused.
In what was fast a viral Twitter clip, Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic shouted at McGee. Unfortunately, he encountered some difficulties. While trying to get his attention, Doncic was heard shouting “Joel” instead of “JaVale.” He quickly asked a member of the team for help with the pronunciation, but fans were quick to laugh at the mistake.
It was an honest mistake and considering Doncic speaks multiple languages and has many other things on his mind, it’s easy to allow for a misunderstanding. And although his comments were made before Doncic mispronounced his name, McGee clearly has a lot of respect for Doncic.
McGee praises Doncic at Mavericks Media Day
JaVale McGee spent last season with the Phoenix Suns and posted some of the best per-36 numbers of his career. However, his season was ended by Doncic as the Mavericks defeated the Suns in seven games, ending with an ugly Game 7 (for Phoenix).
While his media day press conferenceMcGee revealed that his seven-game streak against Doncic played a role in him signing with the Mavericks.
“Watching Luka play seven games in a row definitely helped in the decision to come here,” McGee said. “He is a player who involves everyone. I like being around players like that. All the attention he’s getting and the way this system is set up to have all the shooters close by, that really opens the lane for players like me who are dynamic on the edge.”
McGee’s vertical presence will give Doncic a big lob threat to work with, and head coach Jason Kidd is particularly excited about that aspect of his game.
Kidd discusses Doncic-McGee connection
Throughout his career, McGee has proven to be an extremely athletic tall man. And while he may be near the end of his career, Kidd still believes his ability to play over the edge will be a huge help to Doncic.
“He’s a great pick and roll guy” said Kidd. “I think the relationship between him and Luka will build as they play a little more together. Luka will find him and he has to be ready. But he’s one you can throw almost anywhere and he’ll come up with the catch and finish.”
Hopefully Doncic will learn McGee’s name as he throws him lobs in the regular season.
