The Dallas Mavericks have a big season ahead of them. They made a splash by trading for Christian Wood, but from the buzz being heard around the tournament, they are far from making the commercial play. In fact, they may be forced to engage in antics.
Rumor has it that Jalen Brunson may choose to sign elsewhere this summer (the New York Knicks are Dallas’ main competitors). However, one NBA analyst believes the Mavericks should try to capitalize on Brunson’s deal in another deal that could help them improve.
On a recent episode of ESPN FirstKendrick Perkins was asked which team in the league needs the Washington Wizards to protect Bradley Beal the most, if he ever becomes a free agent. He said it was the Mavericks, and then proposed a Brunson-for-Beal consignment deal.
“Jalen Brunson, who I believe is a hell of a player, his value just went up,” explains Perkins. “Now that you have a guy like Jalen Brunson and his value goes up, you can sometimes use him to sign a deal and get something like Bradley Beal back, and pair him with him. me and a Luca Doncic.”
Of course, Brunson would have to agree to that kind of deal, as he would be an unrestricted free agent. That seems unlikely, given his longstanding interest in joining New York. But if the Mavericks can get their hands on Beal, Perkins believes he will make the Mavericks a ‘force to be reckoned with.’
Beal and Doncic Will Form ‘Best Backcourt in the NBA’
Perkins continued with his statement, drooling at the idea of a Beal-Doncic inferno. He went as far as to say that the combination would form “the best backline in the NBA”.
“Look, Bradley Beal and Luka together will be a force to be reckoned with. And listen, I’m saying this is arguably the best back game in the NBA, and I’m not even joking. So if I were the Dallas Mavericks and Bradley Beal became a free agent, I would do everything in my power to catch him.” Perkins said.
Last season, Beal averaged 23.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists with 45.1% of shots from the field and 30.0% of shots from behind the 3-pointer line. However, he only appeared in 40 games for the Wizards, as he dealt with a wrist injury in the second half of the season.
Getting Beal in exchange for Brunson would be difficult enough, plus, as mentioned, Brunson would have to agree to the trade. In turn, the Mavericks will likely have to explore trading options with and without Brunson included.
The best Mavericks deals for Beal
If Brunson is brought into commerce, Washington will likely be more easily swayed. He’s a young, growing point guard and showed a lot of potential in the playoffs last season. An agreement that includes Brunson might look something like this:
Mavericks get: Bradley Beal
Sorcerers receive: Jalen Brunson, Josh Green, Dwight Powell, First Round Pick 2025, First Round Pick 2017
Meanwhile, if Brunson decides to take his talent elsewhere and opts out of that potential deal, the Mavericks’ best possible offer could look like this:
Mavericks get: Bradley Beal
Sorcerers receive: Tim Hardaway Jr., Josh Green, Dwight Powell, 1st Pick in 2025, 1st Pick in 2026 (Swap), 1st Pick in 2027, 1st Pick in 2028 (Swap)
The first of two deals will obviously be more appealing to the Wizards, but if Beal keeps an eye on Dallas, Washington will likely be forced to make the best deal the Mavericks can offer.
