In the game against the Golden State Warriors on January 25, Dallas Mavericks was blown away by 38 points. While it was a disappointing loss for the Mavs, what’s worse is that they lost a key character in Tim Hardaway Jr. due to injury.

The Mavericks announced that Hardaway Jr had fractured the fifth tarsal bone on his left foot. While it’s still unclear exactly how long he will be sidelined, an injury like this could keep him out for several weeks.

In the second quarter of that bout, Hardaway Jr clumsily descended after driving into the belt and immediately grabbed his leg in pain. From there, he eventually made his free-throw attempts after being fouled but then had to be helped from the field.

“It was just bad luck,” Luka Doncic said postgame. “I talked to him. He is disappointed. Every time you were injured, you were sad, so we tried to cheer him up.”

This is a brutal blow to the Mavericks who really started beat their stride. They won 11 of the last 13 games before this competition with the Warriors and are one of the strongest teams in NBA.

What does this mean for the Mavericks going forward?

Term Trading Active?

As great as the Mavs played prior to this injury, they don’t necessarily have to make a huge shock by the February 10 trading deadline. While it’s always a top priority to make sure you have the best roster you can. maybe, but Dallas could have walked away if it had just made a small deal or even kept the list.

Now, Hardaway Jr’s injury changes everything. If the Mavericks continue to push for a seed higher in the Western Conference standings, they will need to end the season on a strong note. With just 34 games left in their season, it’s likely they won’t have Hardaway Jr. in at least half of them.

While there’s no need to panic and make a hasty transaction over the next two weeks, this could lead to a mindset shift for the Dallas central office. Can they be more aggressive if the right moment presents itself?

There is definitely an opportunity, especially if there are more sellers than buyers by the deadline. Depending on how the market shakes, Dallas could end up delivering one of the biggest shocks ahead of the final stretch of the season.

Void Score

In the first season of his four-year, $75 million contract at Dallas, Hardaway Jr has played well up to this point. Known as a legitimate scorer, he has been fantastic for the Mavs both as a starter and from the bench.

In his 2021-22 campaign, the 29-year-old has averaged 14.3 points per game while shooting 33.6% from outside the arc. While those numbers are all down from last season, he is still the microwave scorer for the Mavs and a key part of their core.

Last season in the knockout stages, he proved to be one of the most important players in the entire squad.

In the near future, Jalen Brunson is absent, Jalen Brunson will need to continue to promote. He recently earned a starting spot alongside Doncic in the backline, but will need to play even better for the Mavericks to replace Hardaway Jr’s scoring point.

Also, Reggie Bullock could be a big part for Dallas going forward. The biggest free agent signing they made last summer, the Mavs will rely heavily on his scoring ability and girth from the bench while Hardaway Jr. absent.

It’s never easy to replace a guy of his caliber, but Brunson and Bullock will have to do their best. The Mavericks are currently 27-21, placing fifth in the Western Conference. Mavs’ Tim Hardaway Jr. suffered a severe leg injury
